Founded officially on 24 June 1596 by
Spaniards on the banks of Grijalva River under the name
of Villa Hermosa; in 1826 the village was raised to the
rank of city under the name of San Juan Bautista
(Saint John the Baptist). The city was captured and
occupied by U.S. forces after the battle of Tabasco
during the Mexican-American War. During the French
intervention in Mexico, French troops occupied the city.
In 1915, the governor of Tabasco, Francisco J. Mújica
ordered to change the name of the city to its current
name Villahermosa.Currently
Villahermosa is a major important and modern city in the
Southeast of the Mexican Republic. Villahermosa is known
for its joyful people which characteristic is the warm
welcome to outsiders and the ability to joyfully
celebrate life.
